Laura Johnson

Laura has extensive experience representing trade unions and their members in all areas related to labour and employment law, including in grievance arbitrations, before federal and provincial labour boards, human rights tribunals and before Ontario’s Financial Services Tribunal. Laura joined Ryder Wright as an associate in 2022 and joined the firm’s partnership in 2024. Prior to that, she garnered over a decade of experience working in house for trade unions, representing both public and private sector employees in provincial and federal jurisdictions.

Over her career, Laura has developed skills in a wide range of areas, including labour law, human rights law, pensions law, regulatory compliance, pay equity, elections law and legislative reform. Adept at navigating political dynamics, Laura uses her keen sense of strategy and creative approaches to achieve successful outcomes for trade unions and their members.

Laura works to build strong relationships with the members she represents and to provide them with practical and straight-forward legal advice. She effectively guides trade unions and their members through complex legal issues and regimes, using plain language to make these concepts readily understandable. Laura has often been called upon to develop and provide legal education to trade union staff and members, as well as to draft communications from trade unions on legal issues that are relevant to their members.

Laura’s commitment to social and economic justice for workers stems from her background as a daughter of trade union activists in the public sector. Her experiences in political activism, community building and refugee sponsorship have only deepened Laura’s dedication to these issues.
