Behzad Akhkend

Behzad is a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. He joined Ryder Wright as an incoming associate in 2022 after articling with another leading union-side labour law firm.
Behzad has a deep-rooted commitment to social justice and human rights advocacy and approaches legal practice with the aim of advancing the cause of working people to achieve a more just, equitable and dignified workplaces. During law school, he developed his litigation skills as a caseworker in the Workers’ Rights division at Parkdale Community Legal Services, where he assisted with the legal representation of workers before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, the Ministry of Labour and the Small Claims Court. Behzad shares the firm’s client-centred approach to legal practice and is committed to using the law to empower clients and support the aims of labour unions and social movements.
Behzad traces his commitments to his experience a union member and a community organizer. He has contributed to social justice advocacy through his involvement with the Workers’ Action Centre, the Canadian chapter of the International Alliance in Support of Working People in Iran, the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers and as a former executive member of the CUPE Youth and International Solidarity Committee.
Education
Prior to law school, Behzad completed a Master of Arts and a Post-Graduate degree in political science, with a focus on the political economy of Canadian immigration and refugee policy.
Activities
Outside of the office, Behzad enjoys biking along Toronto’s lakeshore, playing recreational soccer, gardening, growing organic food and exploring Toronto’s diverse neighbourhoods and cuisines. Behzad speaks Kurdish, Farsi and Turkish and participates in various political and cultural events in Toronto.
